    Another Group's Experiments
Group - Jessica, Phoebe, Michelle, Tara, and Stephanie
Their lab had good instructions. We barely had any questions on what to do, however, their process was very tedious and took a long time. We were able to get clean water.

    Experiment 5
Hypothesis - Experiment 4 could have worked if we used less charcoal but spread it around the coffee filter, and did not mix it as roughly as we did to make the water come down.
What we are going to do - We will be repeating experiment 4 only this time, we will be filling the coffee filter with less charcoal, but spreading it around the filter. We will also not be as rough with it as we were. We are running out of water so we want to be very careful with this experiment.
    Materials
40mL of foul water (that is the rest of our water)
    1/2 teaspoon of charcoal
    1 funnel
    1 coffee filter
    1 Erlenmeyer Flask
Why we are going to do this - The previous could have worked if we were more careful with it and had a less amount of charcoal in the filter. Therefore, we will do the experiment again, just with less materials and more care.
    Fail or Success? - Success!
Just when we were about to give up, we got clear water!
Once all the water was drained, we boiled it to fully purify it.

*please note, we couldn't have gotten clear water without the help of Emily Savage.

    Experiment 4
Hypothesis - If we use only charcoal to filter the water from our last experiment, we will be able to get the same color water we have in the separate container.
What we are going to do - We will take a coffee filter, spread charcoal around in it and place it in a funnel. We will put the Erlenmeyer flask underneath it to catch the water. From there, we will combine the two water samples and figure out a way to fully purify it.

    Materials
    5mL gray water
    1 teaspoon of charcoal
    1 funnel
    1 Erlenmeyer flask
    1 coffee filter
Why we are doing this - We figured that the charcoal in the water will attach itself to the charcoal that is in the coffee filter. This would leave only clearer water to drain out.
    Fail or Success? - Fail.

    Experiment 3
Hypothesis - If we repeat experiment 2 with the rest of the foul water, we will be able to combine the previously filtered water and this one and work to make clear water.
What we are going to do - Putting a coffee filter in a funnel with a layer of sand, rocks, and charcoal, we will be able to produce cleaner water. Then, we will be mixing this semi-clean water with the water from experiment 2 to make all the water clean and clear.
    Materials
    20mL of sand
    1 1/2 teaspoons of charcoal
    1 handful of rocks
    1 coffee filters
    60mL of the contaminated water
    1 Erlenmeyer flask
    1 Granulated Cylinder
    1 Funnel
Why we are doing this - With our last experiment, we were able to water that was about 95% clean. We figured that since that method worked out so well, we would do it with the rest of the foul water we have to add to the rest of the water and figure out a way to make it 100% clean.
    Fail or Success? - Fail
We added way too much charcoal which lead us to have black water. We ran the test twice, the second time with no charcoal and we were still left with water that has a gray tint. We ran out of time before we could try to fix the water, so tomorrow we will be trying to think of a way to purify it.
