Experiment 1
Hypothesis - We believe that if we filter the dirt out of the water, we will have a noticeably cleaner water than the original.
Materials
  • Erlenmeyer flask
  • Funnel
  • 2 coffee filters
  • 13mL sand
  • Handful of rocks
  • 30mL of contaminated water

What we are going to do - We will take an Erlenmeyer flask and put the funnel in the top. Placing the coffee filter in the funnel, we will fill it with a 9mL of sand and a layer of rocks. Pouring 30mL of water, the rocks will collect the bigger pieces of particles that are in the water while the sand takes the smaller pieces. We will do this once and in the second, we will repeat but without rocks, just 4 mL of sand.
Why we are doing it - The rocks will collect big chunks of dirt and whatever else may be in the water which will make fully cleaning the water easier.
Fail or Success? - In between.
~There was a major difference between the before and after water, however, there were a few specs of dirt remaining and the water had a yellow tint. Next time, we plan to separate the oil from the water because we believe that is what is making the water yellow.
